If you like to buy gift for your friend, especially batik, you need to spend time to visit Beringharjo, a traditional market, located in the Malioboro Street, near the Vredeburg fort. Name of this market is derived from words Bering (Beringin trees) and harjo (welfare), is expected that the location, Beringin forest may bring prosperity. Beringharjo market is known as a destination and a trading center of Yogyakarta’s batik products, whether as batik cloth or other products such as batik garment, house dress, shorts, pajamas etc.. The price also vary from cheap to expensive.
Like in other traditional markets, shopping in Beringharjo will need a skill of bargain. We can buy goods with the cheap price, but if you are not carefull you may get the things with expensive price. So do not hesitate to compare with others vendors around to check the price. For those who do not have the ability to bargain we recommend you to shopping in Mirota. Beringharjo market consists of 3 floors, and although the traditional markets they have escalator.
In Beringharjo we can find traditional food which not easy to find in other places. There are also stalls that sell a variety of herbal medicine and aromatherapy. In the other building there are lot of souvenir shop, which you can get in cheaper prize if you buy a dozen. But remember, you need to bargain all the time.. And be careful of your valuable to pickpocket, since this place is crowded.
Getting a parking lot in this place is quite difficult, you need to be patient … and it quite expensive to park, because it will charged you Rp 5,000 for a one time parking, expensive for a traditional markets. We suggest to use public transportation to get here
